Utah Adds Daniels, Martinez To Basketball Coaching Staff

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – The Utah men’s basketball program has added a new name and a familiar face to its coaching staff for the upcoming season.

The Utes announced the hiring of assistant coach Henry Martinez and director and player development Donny Daniels as the newest members of head coach Larry Krystkowiak’s staff.

Martinez is a former Costa Rica national team member and a prominent member of the Central American basketball community as both a player and a coach.

“Henry is a great skill development coach, who also possesses unlimited spirit and energy and we welcome him to our staff,” said Krystkowiak. “He has a willingness to share his basketball experiences, along with his knowledge of the game, and that has created a multitude of opportunities for countless youth in Costa Rica.”

Daniels was formerly a member of legendary Ute coach Rick Majerus’ staff from 1990-2000. He made a name for himself as the chief recruiting force behind landing all-time Utah greats Andre Miller and Keith Van Horn.

Following his first 11 years at Utah, Daniel moved on to Cal State Fullerton, UCLA and Gonzaga. At Gonzaga, he was a key member of Mark Few’s coaching staff which has built the best mid-major program in the country, in the minds of many.

“Donny brings a wealth of experience and value to our program,” Krystkowiak noted. “His basketball knowledge, his life experiences and his community impact alone will go far in connecting our program’s past with the present.

Last season, the Utes finished third in the Pac-12 Conference with a record of 17-14. They did not participate in a postseason tournament.
