Petke, Dunseth Discuss Favorite Foods, Crazy Hairstyles

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – It’s not always serious soccer-talk for Real Salt Lake head coach Mike Petke and TV analyst Brian Dunseth.

On the latest edition of The Mike Petke Show on KSL, the hosts, Petke and Dunseth, were challenged to a game of fill-in-the-blank.

The rules, laid out by RSL’s creative director Tyler Gibbons, were simple; the two hosts were to take turns reading a sentence with a blank space in it to each other and the other was to fill in the blank with a word or phrase of his choice and then explain why. Once a word or phrase had been used once, it could not be repeated in a later sentence.

Food From Back Home

The first sentence given by Dunseth to Petke was “I miss (blank) the most from back home.”

Petke responded,”Bacon, egg and cheese on a soft roll.” The head coach went on to explain that such a treat is a local delicacy and is common on the East Coast, where he grew up. The two continued to banter on the proper nomenclature of the sandwich while sharing a surprising amount of knowledge about the characters from MTV’s one-time hit reality show, Jersey Shore.

To Dunseth, a native of Southern California, what he misses most about home is are “breakfast burritos at like any old school, small Mexican breakfast, lunch and dinner joint.”

Hair-Dyeing Explained

The next sentence, given from Petke to Dunseth, was “The real reason I used to dye my hair is (blank).” Both men were known for having interesting hair styles during their playing days.

In response, Dunseth first made it clear that he highlights his hair, which according to him is a big difference from dying his hair. The genesis of the cosmetic decision, former boy band heart throb and later host of the E Network’s Extra, Mark McGrath.

“I went to go get my hair cut and the girl was like ‘You should do highlights,’ and put the cap and starting stringing my hair through,” recalled Dunseth. “I was like this is super suspect right now because everybody’s staring at me and I’m just going to go with it. And I loved it.”

Back when he was playing as a defender in college and in Major League Soccer, Petke also donned dyed hair. He explained himself to Dunseth by describing his need to switch things up after a tough stretch of playing with the U.S. men’s national team. He came back to college after playing with the national team and immediately was subjected to an impromptu makeover by his roommates. They went out and bought a hair-dye kit from a convenience store and proceeded to cut and dye Petke’s hair.

According to the Petke, it was quite the traumatic experience.

“This was the most painful moment of my life,” said Petke. “This stuff they bought at CVS, at these stores, should not be sold. It’s literally like slicing your head open and putting alcohol, rubbing alcohol right on it.”
