Stallions Looking To Climb Standings After Win

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Salt Lake snapped a two-game skid, while Memphis still has just one win, but they signed Johnny Manziel after their loss to the Stallions.

After six weeks of football, the Orlando Apollos lost their first game of the season and remain on top of the Power Rankings.

The San Antonio Commanders are on fire, riding a three game winning streak.

The Birmingham Iron snapped a two game losing streak with a big road win.

Here is the KSL Sports AAF Power Rankings from the sixth week of the season:

1. Orlando Apollos (5-1)

Result: Lost to Arizona Hotshots 22-17 at home.

Recap: Orlando was down 14-9 at halftime, with neither team scoring in the third quarter. The Apollos scored a touchdown early in the final period to take a 17-14 lead before the Hotshots scored the final touchdown of the game with 5 minutes left to hand Orlando their first loss of the season.

Former SMU quarterback Garrett Gilbert led Orlando with 268 passing yards, 2 touchdowns and 1 interception. Wide receiver Jalin Marshall collected 6 receptions for 98 yards and 1 touchdown. Linebacker Reggie Northrup II was all over the place as he picked up 13 tackles.

2. San Antonio Commanders (4-2)

Result: Defeated Atlanta Legends 37-6 on the road.

Recap: San Antonio was ahead 20-0 before Atlanta scored their only touchdown in the second quarter. An 87-yard interception returned for a touchdown by defensive back Derron Smith was the icing on the cake early in the fourth quarter.

Former Toledo quarterback Logan Woodside had 164 passing yards and 2 touchdowns. Running back Kenneth Farrow II had racked up 35 yards and 1 touchdown. Wide receiver Mekale McKay and tight end Evan Rodriguez hauled in the two touchdowns through the air. San Antonio has won three straight games.

3. Birmingham Iron (4-2)

Result: Defeated San Diego Fleet 32-29 on the road.

Recap: Birmingham allowed San Diego to erase a 21-9 deficit to tie the game late in the fourth quarter, but Nick Novak hit a 44-yard field goal as time expired to pick up the win on the road.

Quarterback Luis Perez had 359 yards passing, 3 touchdowns and 2 interceptions. Former No. 3 overall pick Trent Richardson had 46 rushing yards and 1 touchdown on the ground, while hauling in 7 receptions for 44 yards and a score. The win snapped a two-game losing streak.

4. Arizona Hotshots (3-3)

Result: Defeated Orlando Apollos 22-17 on the road.

Recap: The Hotshots were ahead 14-9 at halftime. Orlando took the lead back early in the fourth quarter, before Arizona scored the go-ahead touchdown with five minutes left in the game.

Quarterback John Wolford threw for 162 yards and 1 touchdown. Wide receiver Richard Mullaney grabbed 6 catches for 73 yards. Running back Tim Cook tallied 71 yards rushing on 11 attempts, while Jhurell Pressley collected 57 yards on the ground and the game-winning touchdown. Linebacker Steven Johnson had 12 tackles and an interception to lead the defense. The win snapped a three-game losing streak.

5. San Diego Fleet (3-3)

Result: Lost to Birmingham Iron 32-29 at home.

Recap: The Fleet trailed 21-9 early in the third quarter before they stormed back to tie the game at 29 with 4:32 left in the game. Birmingham kicker Nick Novak nailed a 44-yard field goal as time expired to hand San Diego their first loss at home.

Former Arizona State quarterback Mike Bercovici had 311 yards passing, 3 touchdowns and 2 interceptions. Wide receiver Dontez Ford hauled in 182 yards receiving on just 3 catches.

6. Salt Lake Stallions (2-4)

Result: Defeated Memphis Express 22-9 at home.

Recap: The Stallions were able to turn it around and snap their two game losing streak. They scored 19 unanswered points to start the game, before Memphis scored 9 straight. Salt Lake put the nail in the coffin with a field goal early in the fourth quarter.

Former Liberty quarterback Josh Woodrum had 243 yards, 2 touchdowns and 1 interception through the air. Running back Joel Bouagnon posted 19 carries for 60, while tight end Nick Truesdell recorded 5 receptions for 67 yards and 1 touchdown.

7. Atlanta Legends (2-4)

Result: Lost to San Antonio Commanders 37-6 at home.

Recap: It was never close against San Antonio, the Legends trailed 20-0 late in the second quarter when they scored their first and only touchdown.

Former Georgia quarterback Aaron Murray threw for 215 yards, 1 touchdown and 3 interceptions. Tight end Keith Towbridge posted 5 receptions for 42 yards.

Atlanta’s loss snapped a two-game winning streak.

8. Memphis Express (1-5)

Result: Lost to Salt Lake Stallions 22-9 on the road.

Recap: The Express couldn’t get much going offensively until the second quarter when they were trailing 19-0. They scored a touchdown and a field goal before halftime and that was it.

Former LSU quarterback Zach Mettenberger left the game with an injury after the first play from scrimmage. Backup quarterback Brandon Silvers had 242 yards and 1 touchdown. Running back Zac Stacey rushed for 31 yards, while wide receiver Reece Horn had 8 receptions for 129 yards. Linebacker DeMarquis Gates tallied 14 tackles to lead the defense. They have lost two straight and five of their last six games.

With issues at quarterback, the Express signed Johnny Manziel after the game.
