OREM, Utah – Utah Valley saw its incredible 22-game home winning streak come to an end in a 83-78 loss to New Mexico State.

Utah Valley fell to 13-7 overall and 2-3 in WAC conference play with the rare home loss.

After back-and-forth action to start the game, the Wolverines grabbed an early advantage by reeling off a 13-0 run to take a 22-10 lead, thanks to a sequence that included five straight points by Jake Toolson.

New Mexico State battled back and cut the deficit to five with Utah Valley taking a 39-33 lead into the half time break.

The Aggies took the lead at 52-51 with about 12 minutes remaining in the second half on an athletic layup by Terrell Brown. The Wolverines responded with a 3-pointer by Wyatt Lowell on the following possession to reclaim the advantage at 54-52.

The game continued to be neck and neck all the way towards the end, with the both teams exchanging baskets and the lead.

With New Mexico State holding a slim 69-66 advantage, AJ Harris hit a big 3-pointer to expand the lead to six with three minute remaining. The Wolverines cut it to a four-point lead but a 3-ball by Jojo Zamora gave New Mexico State a seven point lead with a minute and a half remaining.

Jake Toolson’s 3-pointer with 26 seconds remaining made it a five-point game. After a pair of made free throws by New Mexico State, Toolson scored again with four seconds left, but it wasn’t enough to secure what would have been Utah Valley’s 23rd straight home win.

By The Numbers

Jake Toolson led the game with 26 points on 11-for-14 shooting.

UVU lost despite shooting 60.5 percent from the field. New Mexico State shot 46.9 percent from the floor in the upset victory.

Next Up

Utah Valley will look to respond when the Wolverines hit the road to face UM Kansas City on Thursday. The game will tip off at 5 p.m. and be broadcast on the WAC Digital Network.
