Timpview Defeats Olympus On Game-Winning Field Goal In 5A Semifinals

SALT LAKE CITY – The Timpview Thunderbirds defeated the Olympus Titans on a game-winning field goal to advance to the 5A State Championship game.
Down 19-7 to start the fourth quarter, the Titans fought back to take a late lead.
The Thunderbirds put together a great drive in the final minute that ended in a 24-yard field goal attempt and the win.

First Half
First Quarter
Olympus started with the ball but great defense from Timpview resulted in a quick three-and-out.
On the Thunderbirds’ first drive, they pieced together a few first downs to move into the red zone.
Wide receiver Tei Nacua led the way with multiple catches on the drive. QB Helaman Casuga found Nacua in the end zone for the first score of the game.

The Titans looked to answer but it wouldn’t come on their next drive. Timpview continued to hold strong up front and forced another punt.
Olympus came back with some great defense of their own. After forcing a 3rd & long, the Thunderbirds couldn’t convert and punted away.
James Schlendorf returned the punt into Timpview territory.
After a pass interference call set the Titans up in scoring position, Caden Lloyd caught a ball on the side of the end zone to tie the game at 6.

Olympus nailed the point after to take a one-point lead, 7-6.
The Thunderbirds messed up the catch on the kickoff and were forced to start the drive with their backs against the end zone.
This was no problem for Timpview as Casuga unloaded down the field to Nacua for a big gain.
That play led to a Quezon Villa rushing touchdown.

Timpview led 13-7 at the end of the first quarter.
Second Quarter
Olympus looked poised to score on their next drive. However, a fumble in the red zone game Timpview the ball back with a chance to extend their lead.
The Titans made up for the mistake and buckled down on defense to get the ball right back.

The Titans and Thunderbirds were both forced to punt on their next drives.
Olympus defensive lineman Thomas Mauga got in the backfield for back-to-back sacks in the second quarter.
The Titans started another drive looking to regain the lead before halftime.

Olympus was stifled by the Timpview defense near midfield.
They decided to take a 52-yard field goal but it was short of the target.
The Thunderbirds took over with 2 minutes left in the half.
After Timpview connected on a couple of big plays, they were in the red zone with 30 seconds left. Olympus forced a fumble on the goalline to prevent the score.
Timpview led by six going into the break, 13-7.

Second Half
Third Quarter
Timpview got the ball to start the second half.
The Thunderbirds made it all the way into the red zone before being forced into a field goal. The kick from 34 yards bounced off the left upright to leave the score at 13-7.
Olympus couldn’t get much going on offense and punted back to the Thunderbirds.
Timpview continued to show off its offensive firepower as they marched down the field yet again.

Fourth Quarter
Olympus had just one quarter to score twice while also holding the Thunderbirds to no points.
The Titans couldn’t move the chains on their first fourth-quarter drive and turned the ball over on downs.
Olympus forced a turnover on downs inside the five-yard line to stay alive.

The Titans had nine minutes to score twice if they hoped to pull out a win in the 5A Semifinals.
Ty Seagle capped off an efficient drive with a score to drop the Timpview lead to five, 19-14.
With over five minutes left in the game, a come-from-behind Olympus victory was still very much on the table.

Timpview took two minutes off the clock but had to punt back to Olympus.
The Thunderbirds had one more chance to seal the win with a defensive stand.
Olympus continued to build on its momentum as they went for the big play and converted.
Caden Lloyd caught the deep ball off the trick play and took it in for a touchdown and a 20-19 lead.

Timpview looked to regain the lead with a field goal or touchdown before the end of the game.
The Thunderbirds got down to a 4th & 7 but were able to convert with a minute left.
Timpview lined up for a 24-yard field goal with two seconds left and put it straight down the middle for the win.
The Thunderbirds advanced to the 5A championship game with a 22-20 win over the Olympus Titans.
