SALT LAKE CITY – Real Salt Lake will introduce a safe-standing zone ahead of the 2023 MLS season.
The safe-standing zone will operate in the south grandstand, which has historically been the supporter’s section. However, up until now, supporters have been tasked with battling foldable chairs while standing, swinging flags, socializing, etc.
The safe-standing section has become a key feature across a number of Major League Soccer clubs. Most notably, LAFC and Austin FC boast two of the more formidable home atmospheres and a large role is played by the supporter’s section in their safe-standing zone.

Real Salt Lake is joining the party. All of the seats in the bottom half of the south grandstand have been removed. They will be replaced with arm benches that will be used to lean on while protecting the fans in the section to not injure themselves falling down the stairs.
Safe-standing will inevitibly provide America First Field with an improved atmosphere. The supporters section will be more comfortable, now the supporters, who stood during games anyway, will not have to battle bumping into chairs as they cheer.
Furthermore, the addition of safe standing will increase the capacity of America First Field. The club is yet to confirm how many more fans the stadium will be able to squeeze through the gates.
