SALT LAKE CITY- Often when we talk about coaches it’s only in terms of production on the field, but what about the impact they have off of it? That’s where few head football coaches shine as bright as Ron McBride. Since arriving at the University of Utah for the first time in 1977 as an offensive coordinator, McBride has had an immediate impact not only on the Utes, but the community at large. Monday’s ‘I Love You Man’ golf tournament was not only a prime example of the love McBride has for Utah, but the love Utah has right back for him.

The Ron McBride Foundation

The Ron McBride Foundation sets out to help at-risk elementary, middle school and high school children with after-school programs to keep them safe and happy. Part of their efforts to raise money come from the ‘I Love You Man’ golf tournament held annually.

One of the many benefactors of McBride’s efforts with the foundation is West Jordan Middle School who came out Monday in show of support for the work McBride does in the community. McBride has helped fund WJMS’s after school programs giving the students a much needed safe-haven.

Still Coach To Me

While the head coach of the Utes, McBride boasted an 88-63 record, however, that’s not what impresses his former players the most or what causes them to show up for him. It’s his kind, genuine spirit and father-like presence even after 45 years (for some) since he was their coach. Time after time it came up about McBride’s ability to remember and have interest in not only every player he ever coached, but their wives, children and even grandchildren.

On top of McBride’s impressive ability to love every person he comes in contact with, he has also left a very remarkable imprint on the game in the state. Utah’s current coaching staff is comprised of many of McBride’s former players that include Morgan Scalley, Luther Elliss, and Sharrieff Shah. McBride also has some protégés on staff in head coach Kyle Whittingham who joined his staff in 1994 as a defensive line coach and Colton Swan who was with him at Weber State. Even Utah’s Athletic Director Mark Harlan experienced McBride long before joining the Utes when he was a student at Arizona and McBride was coaching the offensive line.
