BYU Football Celebrates Star Wars Day With Stormtrooper Helmet

PROVO, Utah – BYU football celebrated May the 4th, which is now Star Wars Day. Even though it’s not a recognized holiday, the day has gained popularity on social media each year.
The BYU football social media channels got in on the action and dropped an edit: a mashup of BYU’s helmet plus the iconic Star Wars stormtrooper lid.

Maybe this is a task for BYU’s new equipment boss, Josh Hewitt, to try and bring this mashup to life. The only knock on the edit, the stormtrooper, is associated with the dark side. But that’s just being picky.
BYU football defensive back and return specialist Caleb Christensen got into the spirit of “May the Fourth” by asking Cougar fans, “What’s the best Star Wars episode?” For him, it was Episode III – Revenge of the Sith.
Cougar Nation! What’s the best Star Wars Episode?👀 IMO it’s Episode III. And this the HARDEST fight scene in entire Star Wars saga😤 #StarWarsDay pic.twitter.com/wteBme5fIJ

BYU’s moments with Star Wars
BYU sports has had moments of incorporating Star Wars on occasion. In 2017, mascot Cosmo performed a halftime show as “The Last Jedi” against someone acting as Darth Maul. The performance took place during the BYU-Utah basketball game.
During the 2020 football season, with limited to no fans in attendance, BYU’s “Power of the Wasatch” marching band performed The Mandalorian theme song during halftime of the win over UTSA.
Coming up on May 17th, BYU baseball will have a “Star Wars Night” for their home game against rival Utah at Miller Park, where fans will be able to meet their favorite Star Wars characters.
