10 Memorable Moments From BYU’s Cosmo
Feb 10, 2020, 4:00 PM
PROVO, Utah – BYU’s beloved mascot Cosmo had another viral moment over the weekend by throwing down a slam dunk from the three-point line. So it got me thinking, what are the best moments from a mascot that is considered one of the best in the country? Let’s take a look.
#10 Cosmetic Surgery
The Cosmo we know today didn’t look like he does now back in the day. In 1997, while hunting for Red-Tailed Hawks in Rock Canyon, Cosmo fell 100 feet and needed “Cosmotic Surgery.” Cosmo’s new look lasted only one year in 1997 before BYU had Cosmo perform more surgery to what he looks like today in 1998.

#9 Cosmo: Unmasked
Cosmo lost the mask during a BYU Football game in 2018 against McNeese State. The recovery to get the mask back on Cosmo was as impressive as the dance skills.

#8 Star Wars Fight
During halftime of the 2017 BYU-Utah basketball game at the Marriott Center, Cosmo battled a red villain in Darth Maul.
#7 Trick Shots from a helicopter
Whether from the ground, water, or even the air, Cosmo is going to entertain.
#6 Dance Off against the Oregon Duck
In 2017, there was a debate in the College Football world that went beyond the field. Who was the better mascot, Oregon’s Puddles or BYU’s Cosmo? Don’t mess with a cat that dances as it came straight out of a Tik Tok video.
#5 No Sophomore Slump
One year after becoming a viral dancing sensation, Cosmo had another viral-worthy dance in 2018 during the Utah State game. One could argue was better just because of the music alone. Who doesn’t love a little bit of Drake accompanied to a mascot dancing the night away?
#4 “The Most Athletic Mascot in America”
The good old days of the Mountain West Conference produced many late Monday nights during the basketball season. One of those late 10 p.m. nights for BYU fans was in 2000 against UNLV. Cosmo always being an entertainer was found walking on stilts during a timeout. The clip was aired during the ESPN broadcast to which ESPN play-by-play voice Bob Carpenter called Cosmo the “most athletic mascot in America.”
#3 Slam Dunks from the three-point line
Last Saturday’s dunk from the three-point line was not the first time Cosmo has flew through the air in the Marriott Center. Cosmo has been doing it every now and then the past 20 years with BYU’s Dunk Team, but none have gone viral like the one this past weekend.

I’m dizzy just watching this.
#1 Viral Sensation
The lone highlight from BYU’s 2017 football season (sorry, Brayden El-Bakri) came courtesy of Cosmo. In a game against Boise State, Cosmo and the Cougarettes brought social media to their knees with a dance routine to the song “Rolex” by Ayo & Teo. The performance drew millions of views and even led to Ayo & Teo coming to Provo during the basketball season that year to dance with Cosmo. Name a mascot who can do that?
