“After considerable thought and prayer, I have decided to enter the transfer portal and continue my academic and athletic career at another institution,” wrote Hanshaw. “I am very grateful for my time at BYU and my amazing teammates and coaches.”
Hanshaw signed with BYU in 2017
As a redshirt freshman, Hanshaw was in his third year with the BYU football program. In the 2017 recruiting cycle, he signed with BYU, picking the Cougars over offers from Air Force, Cal, Oregon State, Utah, and Utah State.
A 6-foot-5, 245-pound tight end from Dennis Pitta’s old stomping grounds in Moorpark, California, Hanshaw is a legacy prospect. Hanshaw’s father, Tim Hanshaw, played offensive line for BYU from 1988, 1991-1994. The elder Hanshaw went on to play in the NFL for the San Francisco 49ers from 1995-1998.
Bentley Hanshaw appeared in one game during his BYU career (2020, LA Tech).
Hanshaw was in a busy tight end room that features third-year player Isaac Rex, sophomore Dallin Holker, and fullback/wing tight end Masen Wake. Behind those guys is Carter Wheat and Lane Lunt.

Coming into the year, BYU tight end coach Steve Clark praised Hanshaw for making some of the most significant gains in his personal development in the off-season training with BYU’s strength & conditioning staff.
Transfer Portal entrants from the BYU football program
Hanshaw is the third BYU football player to enter the NCAA’s Transfer Portal from the 2021 roster. The other two include cornerback Jacques Wilson and offensive lineman Cade Parrish. Hanshaw will have three years to play three at his next school.
Players that enter the NCAA’s Transfer Portal have the opportunity to return to their original team if that school offers the option. In addition, once student-athletes enter the portal, they can be contacted by other institutions.
