SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Former Utah State and current Texas Tech head football coach Matt Wells said that Aggies quarterback Jordan Love will bring moxie and “ultra confidence” to whichever team selects him in the 2020 NFL Draft.
Wells spoke about Love during an appearance on ESPN’s SportsCenter a few days prior to the start of the NFL Draft. The Red Raiders head coach was responsible for recruiting Love to USU and coached him from 2016-2018.
The former Utah State coach was first asked what Love brought to whichever team drafts him.
“I think he has a moxie,” said Wells. “He has an ultra confidence in himself. Tremendous teammate. I think the arm talent is unquestioned. He makes some tremendous throws off balance. He can ad-lib. Throw it on the run. Very, very confident, and a great teammate.
Jordan Love’s Sophomore Season
Love and the Aggies struggled in 2019 compared to 2018. Part of those struggles had to do with Wells and his staff leaving Logan for Texas Tech. Wells recalled Love’s sophomore season when the QB completed 64.0 percent of his throws for 3,567 yards, 32 touchdowns, and 6 interceptions.
“I think it just all came together,” said Wells. “David Yost, our offensive coordinator did a tremendous job with him and Jordan put so much time and effort into learning our offense,” Wells said. “It just came together. He had a really good o-line in front of him. He had really good weapons to throw to. He just has a tremendous amount of savvy. He’s accurate. I think he’s confident in his skills. He has the ability to fit it in a window and a tight window. But a competitive drive, really I think that’s a high level.”
Jordan Love & Patrick Mahomes
Many NFL Draft analysts have compared Love to former Texas Tech and current Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes. Wells never coached Mahomes at Texas Tech but spoke to ESPN about the comparisons between Love and the Super Bowl LIV MVP.
Yeah Matt, first of all, what a tremendous comparison on Jordan’s part. Pat is a tremendous talent. I didn’t get to coach Pat here at [Texas] Tech. Kliff [Kingsbury] did a great job with him and he obviously rose to the top of that league real quick. But I think the comparisons maybe is the ability to throw it on the run. Improvise. Jordan can change his elbow. He can change the level that he’s throwing. He can change his release and yet remain very, very accurate with some balls down the field and showing tremendous arm strength. I think those are the comparisons that you see.”
The 2020 NFL Draft
Love will be one of 58 college football players that will participate virtually in the 2020 NFL Draft.
The NFL Draft takes place virtually from April 23-25.
