ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – The state of Utah was well represented in the 2020 East-West Shrine Bowl with five players with local ties participating.
The West team that featured all five players, lost to the East squad 31-27. Utah Utes quarterback Tyler Huntley and defensive tackle John Penisini were named captains for the game. The duo was joined by teammate Darrin Paulo, who played on the offensive line during the Shrine Bowl. One player from both BYU and Utah State also played in the game including Cougars safety Austin Lee and Aggies kicker Dominik Eberle.
Also, Huntley and Penisini started for the West team. Huntley completed 6 of his 8 pass attempts for 47 yards and one touchdown.
On the first drive, Huntley completed a pass for no-gain as the West went three and out. Huntley and the West were much more productive on the second offensive drive. The former Ute threw a 12 yard pass to Jordan McCray from Oklahoma State.
Then Huntley made a big play on his feet, running for 25 yards and was tackled out of bounds, causing the officials to call a unnecessary roughness penalty. On first and goal, Huntley was sacked. The next play, Huntley’s pass was deflected and on third down, the West ran for a short gain. On fourth down and 7, Huntley found San Diego State tight end Parker Houston for a touchdown to cut the lead to 14-7 with 1:46 left in the first quarter.

Later in the second half, Eberle made both of his field goal attempts. Austin Lee stopped an East player from scoring a touchdown with an ankle tackle. Also, Penisini couldn’t get much production on the stat sheet but made an impact on the defensive line as the East offensive lineman double-teamed the star tackle.
Up next for these players is a possible invite to the NFL Scouting Combine and Pro Day.
