SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – For NHL veteran and Utah native Trevor Lewis, the pre-season game between the LA Kings and the Vancouver Canucks played in Salt Lake City, is a rare opportunity for him to play in front of a hometown crowd of friends and family, but for other local NHL hopefuls, this game could make or break their regular season hopes.
This is Lewis’ second time playing a preseason game in Salt Lake as the “Salt Lake Shoot-out” is in its second year. Lewis is an 11-year vet and plays at the center position.
For Kings defensemen Daniel Brickley and Canucks goalie Richard Bachman the game has bigger implications. Their performance in the game could be a deciding factor on whether or not they make an NHL roster.
Brickley, a 24-year-old Sandy native, only played in four NHL games last season but signed a two-year deal with the Kings over the summer. He spent the majority of the offseason in the gym and on the ice, he said during an interview with Utah Puck Report, putting in the work to make sure he is ready to stay on the Kings roster all season.
Bachman, a 32-year-old Salt Lake City native, had his season end in December of last year with an Achilles injury and has had a long road back. In the last year of his contract with the Canucks, Bachman could see preseason action. With the departure of Anders Nillson to Ottawa, there is a spot on the roster for him to earn.
Lewis, the 32-year-old Cottonwood Heights star, is in the last year of his four year contract with the Kings. He has played in 618 and scored 151 points.
Lewis won two Stanley Cups with the organization.
The Salt Lake Shoot-out is Saturday, September 21st at Vivint Arena and limited tickets are still available on the arena’s website.
