PROVO, Utah – BYU football defensive back Austin McChesney who has battled injuries since the 2016 season has announced his retirement.
McChesney has been sidelined due to multiple ACL injuries and it has ultimately cost him his football career.
The former Lone Peak High School standout announced his retirement from football via his personal Twitter account on Monday night.
As many have heard, I have retired from football. As sad as it is, I’m so grateful for the opportunities I was given and the lifelong relationships I made. Thanks so much Cougar Nation for all the love and support over the years. I pray my brother Jackson feels the same. GO COUGS

In his one season playing for the Cougars in 2016, McChesney appeared in nine games as a preferred walk-on and was a significant contributor at cornerback before suffering a season-ending injury against Cincinnati.
Heading into the 2017 football season, BYU cornerbacks coach Jernaro Gilford said that McChesney was one of his most reliable and consistent defensive backs.
Austin’s younger brother, Jackson, returned home from serving a Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints mission earlier this summer. Jackson will compete at running back when fall camp opens up on Wednesday.
In June, Jackson hopped on Cougar Sports Saturday on KSL Newsradio and gave an update at the time on Austin and said, “he’s still recovering and trying to get everything in shape so he can come back.”
Unfortunately, coming back to the BYU football team wasn’t an option as the injuries were too much for the oldest McChesney brother.
