Royals Receive Extra Player Advantage After Red Card By Chicago

SANDY, Utah – Near the end of the first half between the Utah Royals and the Chicago Red Stars, Chicago’ Katlyn Johnson was given a red card for violent conduct.
While vying for position on a clearing ball at midfield, both Johnson and Utah’s Veronica Boquete jumped up to head the ball to a teammate. While airbourne, Johnson reached back and struke Boquete on the side of the head with her elbow.
Whether it was inadvertent or not, Johnson was given a red card for the offense, giving Utah an extra-player advantage for the remainder of the first half and for the entirety of the second half.

The Royals came into their matchup against Chicago with a 2-0 record in the young NWSL season. They were playing with a heavily modified lineup after it was announced earlier this week that three of their best players, Becky Sauerbrunn, Kelley O’Hara and Christen Press were named to the U.S. Women’s World Cup squad. As a result, the team signed three new players prior to the game on Friday.
