SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – The radio voice of the Utes, Bill Riley, recently appeared on the Unrivaled podcast with Scott Mitchell and Alex Kirry to discuss all things Utah football, including the first game Thursday against Weber State.
Head coach Kyle Whittingham, who is usually quite reserved in interviews, surprised local media by recently stating that this year’s squad may be the most talented he’s ever had. Riley echoed those statements by Whittingham.
“I don’t know if the first 11 offense or defense on this team are better than the ‘08 or ‘04 team,” said Riley. “But I can tell you definitively the second team and the third team are wildly more athletic and talented than they’ve had in other years. I think he’s (Whittingham) telling us he feels pretty good about his team.”
Going into the opener against Weber State, Riley feels that the key for the Utes will be to play “clean” with no turnovers or big plays by the Wildcats. He also predicted that Utah would win by 17-21 points.
“The ones have to play well,” said Riley. “What happens with the twos and the threes in the third or fourth quarter, to me, doesn’t matter much. But if the ones come out in the first half and put some points on the board and look impressive, I think that’s what Kyle Whittingham and Morgan Scalley and Troy Taylor want to see.”
The game will kick off Thursday at 6 p.m. at Rice Eccles Stadium.
