Spurs Snap 16-Game Losing Streak With Win Over Jazz

Feb 28, 2023, 9:26 PM | Updated: Mar 1, 2023, 11:43 am

SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah Jazz fell to the Spurs 102-94, snapping San Antonio’s 16-game losing streak.

Lauri Markkanen scored 28 points but it wasn’t enough as the Jazz were outdueled by Keldon Johnson’s 25 points.

The Jazz now head out on a six-game road trip.

First Quarter

The Jazz jumped out to a 13-8 start thanks to eight quick points from Lauri Markkanen.

However, the Spurs answered back with a strong run, forcing six Jazz turnovers, and knocking down 4-8 from the three-point line.

Markkanen led the Jazz with 14 points, while Keldon Johnson led the Spurs with 10.

After one the Jazz trailed San Antonio 32-30.

Second Quarter

The Spurs extended their lead to 45-36 midway through the second as the Jazz experimented with new lineups, including the NBA debut of Johnny Juzang.

Unsurprisingly, without Jordan Clarkson and Collin Sexton in the lineup the Jazz struggled to score and managed only 18 points in the second quarter.

Markkanen scored 22 to lead the Jazz while Walker Kessler added eight, while the Spurs were led by 14 from Johnson.

At the half, the Jazz trailed the Spurs 50-48.

Third Quarter

The Jazz built their lead to ten, 68-58 with 4:17 left in the third.

The Spurs responded well down the stretch, outscoring the Jazz 9-2 over the final two minutes of the quarter to trim the Jazz lead to two.

Markkanen upped his scoring total to 27 points, while Johnson and Doug McDermott had 16 each to pace the Spurs.

After three the Jazz led the Spurs 73-71.

Fourth Quarter

Back-to-back-to-back Spurs three in the first four minutes of the fourth quarter erased the Jazz lead and gave San Antonio an 88-82 lead.

Talen Horton-Tucker answered with consecutive threes of his own to tie the game with 5:14 left to play.

A Johnson push shot sparked a 6-0 run for the Spurs to build a 98-93 lead with 2:06 left to play.

The lead proved too large to overcome as the Jazz fell to the Spurs 102-94.
