PROVO, Utah – The latest Transfer Portal pickup for BYU football is Utah State offensive lineman Weylin Lapuaho.

A 6-foot-4, 310-pound prospect, Lapuaho started in all 13 games at right guard for the Aggies during the 2022 season. He was part of an offensive line that helped Utah State rush for 159.2 yards per game. In addition, Utah State’s offensive featured a 1,000-yard running back in Calvin Tyler Jr.

Lapuaho was a three-star prospect out of Bingham High School in the 2022 recruiting cycle. He held offers from the Aggies, Utah, New Mexico, and others. However, BYU was never in the mix for the talented guard.

One year later, Lapuaho has an opportunity to provide an immediate impact along BYU’s offensive line entering year one of the Big 12 Conference.

Weylin Lapuaho fills a need for BYU

Lapuaho is the first offensive lineman transfer to commit to BYU during the 2023 portal cycle. The offensive line position is an area of need to shore up the depth after losing Clark Barrington and Campbell Barrington to Baylor.

Starting guard Harris LaChance declared for the NFL draft, so there are two open guard spots for Lapuaho to step in and become an immediate starter.

The NCAA allows players to transfer once without sitting out. Lapuaho will be eligible in 2023 and has three years remaining in his collegiate career.

Lapuaho entered the Transfer Portal two days after Utah State participated in the 2022 First Responder Bowl in Dallas against Memphis. Then hours after that move, BYU offered, and Lapuaho pounced on the opportunity to play in Provo.

BYU’s transfer portal activity

Lapuaho is the seventh Transfer Portal commitment BYU has received. The others include QB Kedon Slovis (Pitt), RB Aidan Robbins (UNLV), EDGE Isaiah Bagnah (Boise State), DT Jackson Cravens (Boise State), NT Wyatt Dawe (Southern Utah), and Kicker Will Ferrin (Boise State).
