ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – BYU’s starting quarterback for the New Mexico Bowl is Sol-Jay Maiava-Peters.

Maiava-Peters is replacing Jaren Hall, who is dealing with an ankle injury he suffered in the regular season finale against Stanford. Today will mark the first start of Maiava-Peters’s collegiate career.

A 6-foot-1, 200-pound signal-caller from Hau’ala, Hawaii, Maiava signed with BYU in the 2020 recruiting class. During his prep career, Maiava moved to the east coast to play at St. John’s College High School in Washington, D.C.

Maiava-Peters was an Elite 11 finalist in the 2020 class. Early in his prep career, he received a scholarship offer from Jim Harbaugh and the Michigan Wolverines.

Maiava ended up signing with BYU, where he was the third-string quarterback behind Zach Wilson and Baylor Romney in the 2020 season. His last game action was during that season in blowout reps against Navy and North Alabama.

At the start of bowl week, Maiava-Peters was listed as BYU’s third quarterback behind Jaren Hall and Cade Fennegan.

Kalani Sitake on Sol-Jay Maiava-Peters: “Got it all”

“Sol-Jay’s got it all, man. He’s a gamer and he finds ways to make plays. He’s got extreme confidence. But he finds ways to make plays and buy more time,” said BYU coach Kalani Sitake to KSL Sports.

Along with Maiava-Peters, BYU will also have Nick Billoups and Cade Fennegan available to play. Fennegan has been dealing with an ankle injury he suffered leading up to the November 5 game against Boise State.

BYU versus SMU in the 2022 New Mexico Bowl kicks off at 5:30 p.m. (MT) and will air on ABC and KSL NewsRadio.
