Weber State Football’s Season Ends With Loss To Montana State

OGDEN, Utah – The 2022 college football season for the Weber State Wildcats came to an end after suffering a 33-25 loss to Montana State in the FCS Playoffs.

Weber State had the tall task of going to Bozeman and defeat Montana State in order to advance to the FCS Quarterfinals but came up short.

The Wildcats put up a fight after trailing 26-10 entering the fourth quarter by outscoring the Bobcats 15-7 in the final period.

Bronson Barron completed nine of his 13 pass attempts for 82 yards and one touchdown. Kylan Weissler also played and completed 9 of his 13 pass attempts for 111 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception.

Dontae McMillan led the rushing attack with nine carries for 56 yards.

Weber State Ends Season With 10-3 Record

Weber State got the early lead with a 39-yard field goal by Kyle Thompson to give WSU a 3-0 lead with 11:21 remaining in the first quarter. Montana State answered with a two-yard rushing touchdown by Sean Chambers. The Bobcats held a 7-3 lead with 7:30 left in the first.

Early in the second quarter, Montana State extended their lead to 10-3 with 14:34 left after a 36-yard field goal. Weber State tied the game at 10 with 9:32 remaining in the first half with a 15-yard touchdown connection between Barron and Ty MacPherson.

Montana State answered with three straight field goals, two coming later in the second quarter and one with 9:50 left in the third to put the Bobcats in front 19-10.

Chambers connected with Derryk Snell for a 28-yard touchdown to extend Montana State’s lead to 26-10 with 2:36 left in the third. Early in the fourth quarter, Montana State put the game out of reach with a 47-yard touchdown pass from Chambers to Willie Patterson to give the Bobcats a 33-10 lead with 14:10 to go in the game.

Weber State started their comeback attempt with a 31-yard touchdown pass from Weisser to Jon Christensen to cut Montana State’s lead to 33-18 after the two-point conversion with 9:34 remaining in the game.

With 4:42 left in the game, Weisser found Hayden Meacham for an eight-yard touchdown to cut the deficit to 33-25.

Weber State finished its season with a 10-3 overall record and 6-2 in Big Sky play. They beat Western Oregon, Utah State, Utah Tech, UC Davis, Eastern Washington, Portland State, Montana, Idaho State, Northern Arizona, and North Dakota in the first round of the FCS Playoffs. The Wildcats lost to Montana State, Sacramento State, and Montana State again in the postseason.
