Pregame observations

  • BYU will be wearing its new navy blue uniforms for the first time in the 2022-23 season.
  • Injured players Trevin Knell, Hao Dong, Nate Webb, and Tanner Hayhurst showed up to the game in suits and ties.
  • Compared to the season opener, where the student section was filled to the top, the turnout from The ROC was low tonight. The student section only filled up the bottom half of the seating.

Back-and-forth First Half

  • 19:49 – Jaxson Robinson gets the scoring started for BYU with a dunk. BYU 2, Missouri State 0
  • 18:58 – BYU’s first turnover of the game comes off a Missouri State steal on Rudi Williams. BYU 2, Missouri State 2
  • 18:09 – Rudi Williams shows his sharpshooting abilities from deep, and knocks down a three. BYU 5, MSU 2
  • 15:20 – Spencer Johnson hit a mid-range bucket as the shot clock was winding down. BYU 10, MSU 6
  • 14:58 – Back-and-forth action. BYU has an early lead despite four turnovers in the game’s opening five minutes. BYU 10, MSU 8
  • The only lineup change Mark Pope made with the second unit is Dallin Hall going to point guard in replace of Rudi Williams. BYU’s four other starters stayed in the game.
  • 13:02 – Reserves Noah Waterman, Atiki Ally Atiki, and Trey Stewart now join Dallin Hall, with Gideon George staying on the floor. MSU 12, BYU 10
  • 12:59 – Noah Waterman’s first three as a BYU Cougar. BYU 13, MSU 12

  • 11:22 – BYU basketball has committed six turnovers that have led to six Missouri State points. BYU 15, MSU 15
  • 10:56 – No. 33 Dawson Carper on Missouri State set a pick that welcomed Richie Saunders to D1 college basketball. A hard screen that created space for the Bears to knock down its first three of the night. MSU 18, BYU 16
  • 9:14 – Waterman hits a wide-open corner three to slow down a bit of a run that the Bears were on. MSU 23, BYU 21

  • 7:54 – A third three for Waterman. Refs are letting these guys play. A lot of contact on the floor but no whistles. BYU 24, MSU 23
  • 5:04 – BYU basketball built up a four-point lead, then Missouri State’s Chance Moore knocked down a three. BYU 29, MSU 28
  • 2:51 – Missouri State has scored 10 points off BYU’s nine turnovers. The Bears are playing stingy defense on the perimeter against BYU. MSU 32, BYU 29

  • 2:47 – Three-point play for BYU basketball in an unconventional way. Spencer Johnson went to the free throw line for two free throws out of the timeout. He made the first, but missed the second. On the miss, he came up with the offensive rebound and scored a layup to tie the game. BYU 32, MSU 32
  • 1:08 – Fousseyni Traore pulled down a rebound off a missed free throw from Gideon George. Traore was up against MSU’s 6-foot-11, 260-pound Dawson Carper, and it wasn’t an issue for BYU’s star rebounder. He got the board and then scored at the rim. Capped off a 7-0 run for BYU. BYU 36, MSU 32
  • 0.31 – Former Saint Peter’s guard Matthew Lee buried a bank shot three. BYU 36, MSU 35
  • Halftime: BYU 36, MSU 35

Halftime Notes

  • BYU’s Dunk Team provided some of the early halftime entertainment. Utah Jazz executive and BYU great Danny Ainge was entertained by the dunk squad. Imagine what type of trade assets he could pull from a high-flying dunk act.
  • BYU committed 10 turnovers in the first half, three of those were from Rudi Williams. Jaxson Robinson had two turnovers.
  • BYU shot 50% from three knocking down six of 12 three-point attempts.
  • Noah Waterman was a perfect 3-for-3 from beyond the arc.
  • BYU basketball was (+7) in rebounding as they pulled down 22 boards to MSU’s 15. Atiki, George, and Traore each had four rebounds.
  • Arkansas transfer Chance Moore for Missouri State led all scorers with 10 points. BYU’s leading scorer was Waterman with nine.

  • 11:50 – BYU’s first turnover of the second half was from a Gideon George charging call that looked like a 50/50 call. Not a coincidence BYU is taking care of the rock and they now have a double-digit lead. BYU 50, MSU 40
  • 11:16 – Missouri State’s Chance Moore goes on a 6-0 run of his own. He knocked down a three, then drew an and-one. BYU 50, MSU 46
