SALT LAKE CITY – The Weber State men’s basketball program picked up its first victory of the Eric Duft era by defeating the Western Colorado Mountaineers.

The Wildcats hosted the Mountaineers at Dee Events Center on Thursday, November 10.

Weber State beat Western Colorado, 83-67. The win was victory No. 1 for first-year Wildcat head coach Eric Duft.

It wasn’t a wire-to-wire victory for the Wildcats, but it was close to one. The Mountaineers owned a one-point advantage on the scoreboard twice during the opening three minutes of action. After that, it was all Weber State.

The Wildcats’ offense took over in the final 17 minutes of the first half and Weber State took a 50-28 lead into the locker room at halftime. In the second half, the Wildcats were outscored by six points, but the early deficit was too much for the Mountaineers to overcome. Weber State’s largest lead of the night was 25 points.

During the 40-minute contest, the Wildcats shot 50.8 percent from the field, including 8-20 for 40 percent on three-pointers. By comparison, the Mountaineers shot 40.3 percent overall and 46.2 percent from beyond the arc.

One of the biggest differences during the game was Weber State’s advantage at the foul stripe. The Wildcats went 15-18 on free throws and the Mountaineers only took nine shots at the charity stripe, making five attempts.

The Wildcats had three players reach double figures in scoring. Dillon Jones led Weber State with 21 points on 6-10 field goals. He added 12 rebounds, five assists, and two steals.

Kevin Jimenez led Western Colorado with 13 points.

With the win, Weber State improved its record to 1-1 this season, including 1-0 at home.

Weber State’s next game is on the road against the Colorado State Rams on Monday, November 14 at 7 p.m. (MDT). ESPN Analytics currently gives Weber State a 26.0 percent chance to win at Moby Arena in Fort Collins, Colorado.
