SALT LAKE CITY- Utah football has done very well in the College Football Playoff era making an appearance in the rankings for the seventh season now. The CFP voters placed the Utes at No. 14 in the first rendition of the 2022 rankings to crown a champion.
Utah started the College Football Playoff era with a bang making the rankings every week in the first three years of its existence from 2014-2016. The Utes have finished ranked in the College Football Playoff No. 22 in 2014 and 2015, No. 19 in 2016, No. 17 in 2018, and No. 11 in 2019 and 2021. The Utes are tied for seventh most appearances in the College Football Playoff Rankings of any team in the country with 35 total weeks in the poll.
The Utes started the season ranked No. 7 in the AP Poll and widely thought to be a potential CFP dark horse. Unfortunately for Utah, that dream has ended for 2022, but they still have a chance to win their second straight Pac-12 Championship and finish the season ranked high in the College Football Playoff.
Taking A Look At The Pac-12 In the CFP
The Pac-12 has seen a bit of a resurgence in the poll rankings in 2022. In the AP Top 25, the Conference of Champions currently have four teams including Utah in the top half of the poll, with five teams total ranked.
The CFP seems to mostly agree with the AP having Oregon at No. 8, USC at No. 9, and UCLA at No. 12 along with the Utes. Also, Oregon State made an appearance in the rankings at No. 23.
