PROVO, Utah – BYU’s leading receiver Kody Epps is out for the remainder of the 2022 season.

Epps suffered an upper-body injury late in the fourth quarter during a loss to the Liberty Flames on October 22. As a result, he missed the East Carolina game on October 29 and will be out for the remaining three guaranteed games in BYU’s season.

A third-year freshman out of Mater Dei High School in California, Epps has had a breakthrough season after dealing with nagging foot injuries his first two years at BYU. Epps led BYU in receptions for the year with 39, the leader in yards with 463, and touchdown grabs with six.

Kody Epps remains in “high spirits”

“We were hoping after getting some information back and meeting with the doctors. But that sucks because he’s dealt with some injuries in the past. He’s in high spirits,” said BYU head coach Kalani Sitake on Monday. “I’ve spoken with him, and he’s excited to keep his role as a leader on this team and to keep working with us. I’m excited about his energy and his approach to it. Not excited that we don’t get his production on the field.”

Epps has provided a lot of energy for this BYU team on and off the field. He’s a player who has been an uplifting voice for a BYU team currently reeling with a four-game losing streak. After beginning the season with a 2-0 record and a No. 12 ranking in the AP Top 25, BYU is now 4-5.

The wide receiver spot is one area where BYU’s depth has produced at a high level this season. BYU still has Puka Nacua, Chase Roberts, Keanu Hill, and Brayden Cosper as some of the top pass catchers in the offense.

Epps has three years of eligibility remaining in his collegiate career. The 5-foot-11, 185-pound receiver will be one of BYU’s top receivers when they begin play as a Big 12 program next season.
