PROVO, Utah – The BYU Cougars have had their fair share of elite tight ends, thanks in part to BYU football’s tight end coach Steve Clark.

Hans Olsen sat down with Clark to discuss his journey to BYU and some wins and losses along the way.

“It has been quite the life… it has been harder on my wife. She has done the hard things,” Clark began telling his story to KSL Sports Zone host Hans Olsen.

With four kids at 32 years old, Clark’s wife told him that he needed to pursue his dream, so he quit his job at a shoe store and pursued being a football coach.

BYU Tight End Coach Steve Clark’s Journey To BYU Football

His first break into the coaching world was as a volunteer graduate assistant on defense for the University of Utah football on an offer from Kyle Whittingham.

Clark’s first dream was always to play football, but when he realized that wasn’t his path, he knew he wanted to stay in the game.

After bouncing around a little Clark went back to Utah as a volunteer. He credited his wife and mother-in-law for getting his family through this time.

Eventually, Clark made a lateral move to be a GA with the BYU football team. From there, he went on to be the offensive coordinator under Ed Lamb at Southern Utah University.

“We (Clark’s family) have moved 16 times throughout this time,” Clark said.

Next a stop at Weber State with Jay Hill and then finally back to BYU to coach the tight ends.

“I grew up in Provo, I know all about BYU Football and what it means to people,” Clark tells of his current position. “There is a great history of tight ends here.”

Clark finished the interview with a touching conversation about how his dream is still to play football.

“I still dream about playing,” Clark chuckled.

A Coach’s Journey is a special addition to the Hans & Scotty G. podcast feed hosted by Hans Olsen. Olsen seeks to have in-depth conversations with local college football coaches about their ups and downs as they chase the dream.
