Utah State wide receiver Brian Cobbs celebrates a catch against UConn at Maverik Stadium on Saturday, August 27, 2022.

LOGAN, Utah – Utah State’s leading touchdown scorer this season got behind the Air Force defense to give the Aggies a 7-0 first quarter lead.

Utah State (1-4, 0-1) is hosting the Air Force Falcons (4-1, 1-1) at Maverik Stadium on Saturday, October 8.

On an eight play drive, the Aggies gained 41 rushing yards before junior quarterback Cooper Legas drooped back and found Cobbs streaking down the Air force sideline for a 31-yard scoring grab.

For Cobbs, it was his fourth touchdown of the season. He now has 29 catches this year and has caught three touchdowns passes from Legas as their rapport together grows stronger.

Utah State running back Calvin Tyler Jr. gained 31 yards on five carries on the drive. Legas had one rush for 10 yards and went 1-for-2 through the air.

Utah State currently leads 7-0 with Air Force driving in the red zone.

Utah State football hosts Air Force Football

This game is a matchup of the Mountain West’s least penalized team (Air Force) against the conference’s most penalized team (Utah State).

The Aggies have shot themselves in the foot repeatedly with 47 penalties, racking up 432 negative yards, or an average of 86.4 penalty yards per game. They have the fourth most penalties in college football this season.

On the other sider of the coin, Air Force has committed 18 penalties this season for an average of less than 30 penalty yards per game. By contrast, Utah State has had 11 penalties in a single game three times already this year.

Beyond beating themselves with penalties, the Aggies have turned the ball over at an alarming rate this season. Last in the Mountain West with 15 total turnovers, USU is minus-eight in turnover margin this season, tied for the fifth worst mark in FBS. Their 15 turnovers is last in college football and 13 TO’s in the past three games would be tied with Northwestern for the worst mark overall.

Utah State named five captains for tonight’s game. Graduate senior wide receiver Brian Cobbs; senior linebacker AJ Vongphachanh; graduate senior safety Hunter Reynolds; freshman linebacker Max Alford; and graduate senior offensive lineman Chandler Dolphin.
