A Coach’s Journey: BYU O-Line Coach Darrell Funk

SALT LAKE CITY – BYU’s offensive line coach Darrell Funk had a long path to the Cougars, with stops at some prestigious universities.
Funk was hired for the job in Provo in 2021.
A native of Fort Collins, Colorado, and a former WAC rival of BYU’s at Colorado State, Funk has never coached at BYU previously nor worked with Kalani Sitake or Roderick. So how did he end up at BYU?
Darrell Funk’s Path To The BYU Cougars
Funk’s playing career happened at Colorado State University. After that, he said the NFL wasn’t a door open to him so he helped out on the coaching staff for his fifth year of college.
The road trip of a lifetime led to a GA position at the University of Illinois. From there he spent time with plenty of notable programs, the highest profile being the University of Michigan from 2011-2014 as the offensive line coach.
Funk talked with Hans about the importance of his connections in the coaching world during his career. He spent time at 14 schools in total during his time as a GA or coach.
“It was always connections, someone I either played for or worked for,” Funk said.

Funk met his wife while at the University of Illinois and they now have three kids.
