A Coach’s Journey: BYU Assistant Head Coach Ed Lamb

SALT LAKE CITY – BYU’s assistant head coach Ed Lamb is an important piece of the BYU Football team, but do you know how he got to where he is?
Lamb’s coaching journey began in youth sports.
“Having my dad and other people coach me, those were my idols,” he told Hans Olsen host of A Coach’s Journey. “I wanted to be like those guys … I always saw myself as a coach.”

Ed Lamb’s Coaching Journey To BYU
Lamb’s college career with BYU ended in 1996 and when it looked like the NFL wasn’t in his future he turned his gears toward coaching. His first job was as a graduate assistant at the University of Redlands in California.
After one season with BYU as a graduate assistant following his time at Redlands, Lamb went to the University of Idaho and then to the University of San Diego with Jim Harbaugh, the now famed Michigan head coach.
While Lamb was on this wild journey, he was simultaneously starting and raising a family. After being let go from the University of Idaho, Lamb worked in a bank for a few months.
“I was recruiting financial executives, just piecing together a living. The question in my mind was always ‘Am I doing the right thing by my family here?’ and it’s always a hard question to answer,” Lamb said on the podcast.

From San Diego, Lamb moved on to coach the Southern Utah Thunderbirds. At SUU, he inherited an 18-game losing streak but improved the T-Birds to multiple playoff berths.
His success at SUU turned into a dream job with BYU where he currently sits as the Assistant Head Coach to his alma mater, the BYU Cougars.
