SALT LAKE CITY – New York Jets head coach Robert Saleh said that Zach Wilson participated in a workout and the team is waiting to see how his knee responds before making a decision on his availability for Week 1.

On Monday, September 5, Saleh spoke about his quarterback’s progress in recovering from a torn meniscus and bone bruise.

The second-year head coach said that Wilson worked out and the Jets will see how the quarterback’s knee responds to the physical training session before making a decision on when he’s able to play. “It’s possible” that Wilson could play in New York’s season opener, according to Saleh.

“Eventually, whether it’s this week or next week, it’s going to be the same story: He has to get back in there,” Saleh said of Wilson’s injury recovery. “You just have to rip the Band-Aid off when he’s ready to play. When he’s healthy and he feels good, he’s going to play football.”

“Looked good, felt good,” Saleh said after his quarterback’s workout. “We’re going to see how the knee responds today and tomorrow and we’ll have an answer for everybody on Wednesday.”

Shortly after Saleh’s remarks on Wilson, the Jets announced that Wilson had been named a team captain for the second straight season.

In New York’s 2022 preseason opener, Wilson went 3/5 for 23 yards and one interception before suffering a bone bruise and torn meniscus on his only carry. Less than three weeks ago, Wilson underwent surgery to repair the injury.

During Wilson’s rookie campaign last season, the former BYU gunslinger missed four games because of a knee injury and threw for 2,334 yards, nine touchdowns, and 11 interceptions with a 55.6 completion rate.

Before his time in the NFL, the Corner Canyon High School product had a standout career at BYU. Wilson helped the Cougars to an 11-1 record during his final season in Provo.

The Jets begin their 2022 schedule at home against the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday, September 11 at 11 a.m. (MDT). The game will be televised on CBS and NFL Sunday Ticket.
