SALT LAKE CITY – Utah Jazz summer league standout Bruno Caboclo will get a chance to prove he’s once again ready for the NBA after signing a contract with the Boston Celtics on Monday.

Caboclo appeared in two games at the Salt Lake Summer League for the Jazz where he averaged 16.5 points, 6.5 rebounds, 1.5 steals, and 2.5 blocks per game while shooting 52 percent from the field.

The Brazillian big man followed that up with a strong three-game showing in Las Vegas where he averaged 9.0 points and 6.3 rebounds while shooting an efficient 73 percent from the floor.

According to The Athletic’s Shams Charnia, the deal with the Celtics is non-guaranteed.

“Free agent Bruno Caboclo has agreed to a training camp deal with the Boston Celtics and will compete for a roster spot,” Charania tweeted.

Though the Jazz lack depth at the center position, Caboclo would have needed time on the floor to develop into an NBA player, minutes that will be allocated to rookie Walker Kessler and oft-injured big man Udoka Azubuike.

Caboclo was drafted in the first round with the 20th overall pick in the 2014 NBA Draft by the Toronto Raptors.

After his selection, Fran Fraschilla notoriously said Caboclo was “two years away from being two years away,” but he seems to have shown he’s no longer a longshot to compete at the NBA level.

The Brazillian big man will turn 27 shortly before the NBA season and has played just six games in the league over the last two years.

After spending three and a half seasons with the Raptors, Caboclo was traded to the Sacramento Kings in 2018. The center has also spent time with the Memphis Grizzlies and Houston Rockets before finding his newest home in Boston.
