SALT LAKE CITY – Devastating news coming out of Eugene as Oregon Ducks tight end Spencer Webb passed away at age 22 following a tragic accident on Wednesday.

Spencer Webb was entering his junior season with Oregon. According to officials, Webb fell on rock slides and hit his head. The accident happened on the slides west of Triangle Lake, which is located about 35 miles west of Oregon’s campus.

According to the Lane County Sherriff’s Office, deputies arrived to the scene at 2:30 p.m. and bystanders and paramedics were not able to revive him. Authorities said Webb was found “approximately 100 yards down the a steep trail” and search and rescue personnel assisted with bringing him back to the roadway.

“There is no evidence of foul play and his death appears to be accidental,” the sheriff’s office said.

The rock slides is an area that has large slabs of rock that form natural slides, which turn into small waterfalls and connect to a swimming hole.

Oregon head football coach Dan Lanning confirmed Webb’s death with a tribute on Twitter.

“So full of life in every moment of the day,” Lanning posted. “Your smile and energy will be missed, Spencer. I love you!”

The Sacramento, California native played two seasons in three years for the Ducks. As a freshman in 2019, he had 18 receptions for 209 yards and three touchdowns in nine games played. Webb didn’t play during the 2020 season. Last season, Webb hauled in 13 catches for 87 yards and one TD in 11 games.

In 20 games played for the Ducks, Webb had 31 receptions for 296 yards and four touchdowns. Webb played the Utes once in his career and that was last season at Rice-Eccles Stadium. He had one catch for three yards.

Oregon’s athletic department has not made any announcement as of the time this story was published.
