SALT LAKE CITY – NFL great and former New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning visited LaVell Edwards Stadium and met with some BYU football legends.

The two-time Super Bowl champion shared a photo of his visit to Provo, Utah with a post on Twitter on Thursday, June 21.

Manning, who led the Giants to a pair of Super Bowls and won MVP of the two title games, visited BYU football’s LaVell Edwards Stadium alongside a pair of Cougar icons and fellow former NFL QBs in Ty Detmer and Jim McMahon.

“This is getting ridicules. Everywhere I go, more football players. ⁦ @JimMcMahon ⁩ and Ty Detmer,” Manning tweeted.

McMahon later confirmed the purpose of the visit with a quote tweet of Manning’s original post.

“Fun day @BYUfootball with these 2. Check out Eli’s Places streaming on ESPN+ this fall! @TyDetmer14,” McMahon shared.

BYUtv’s Hemā Heimuli Jr. confirmed “they’re doing an “Eli’s Place” episode about BYU Quarterbacks.”

Detmer said he “had a great time” with Manning and McMahon.

“Eli Places” is a show that streams exclusively on ESPN+ and is described by the sports network as a show where Manning “takes on his own version of his brother’s [Peyton Manning] signature show [Peyton’s Places] to explore what makes college football a way of life across the country. Eli will travel to some of the most well-known and historic college football establishments and meet with giants in the sport to better understand what makes college football such a national sensation.”

The show debuted in September 2021.

Before his retirement and career as a show host, Manning led the Giants’ offense from 2004-2019. He entered the league as the No. 1 overall pick out of Ole Miss in the 2004 NFL Draft. Manning finished his illustrious career with two Super Bowl rings, two Super Bowl MVP awards, a Walter Payton Man of the Year award, and four Pro Bowl selections. His No. 10 jersey was retired by New York.

Jim McMahon and Ty Detmer

Prior to their time in the NFL, McMahon and Detmer were star quarterbacks at BYU.

Jim McMahon

McMahon, a native of Roy, Utah, played for the Cougars from 1977-81. During his BYU career, McMahon broke 70 NCAA football records and won multiple awards, including the Davey O’Brien and Sammy Baugh.

Following his BYU career, McMahon was selected by the Chicago Bears with the No. 5 overall pick in the 1982 NFL Draft. McMahon led the Bears to a pair of Super Bowl championships during his time in Chicago. He played in the NFL until 1996. McMahon finished his career as a two-time champion, NFL Comeback Player of the Year (1991), Pro Bowl selection.

Ty Detmer

Detmer followed McMahon and played at BYU from 1987-91. Like McMahon, Detmer set multiple NCAA records during his college career. After his time at BYU, Detmer owned the record for the most passing yards in a college career. He was honored as the 1990 Heisman Trophy winner. Detmer also earned a pair of Davey O’Brien awards, a Sammy Baugh, and a Maxwell Award during his time as the Cougars’ signal-caller.

After his college career, Detmer was selected by the Green Bay Packers during the ninth round of the 1992 NFL Draft. Despite spending most of his NFL career as a backup quarterback, Detmer played in the league until 2005.

Both former Cougars are in BYU’s Hall of Fame and have their retired jerseys featured inside LaVell Edwards Stadium.
