SALT LAKE CITY – Former NBA player and notorious Utah Jazz troll Vernon Maxwell announced that he would become a fan of the team if they were to hire Sam Cassell as their next head coach.

On Wednesday it was reported that Cassell, currently an assistant coach with the Philadelphia 76ers is a candidate for the open Jazz job and would be interviewing for the position.

Soon after, the news had reached Maxwell.

“Hey @utahjazz I heard you guys are interviewing my man Sam Cassell,” Maxwell tweeted. “We are going to become the best of friends if you all hire my man! I’ll be your BIGGEST FAN IN THE NBA. I’ll forgive you for everything and choose a new team that bothered Mad Max like Indiana or Portland!”

Maxwell played 13 seasons in the NBA, six of which came with the Houston Rockets in the 1990s where he developed his longstanding rivalry with the Jazz.

The Jazz are a frequent target of Maxwell’s disdain on Twitter, often taking shots at the state of Utah and the team’s fans.

Cassell and Maxwell were teammates on the Rockets from 1993-95 where the pair won two NBA titles together.

Maxwell Has History With Jazz

Maxwell has a long history of going after the Jazz on his social media pages after retiring from the NBA.

The former guard took shots at the Jazz while they owned the best record in the NBA during the 2021-22 season.

“It’s understandable to brag and celebrate having the best record in February when your franchise’s biggest accomplishment is food poisoning MJ,” Maxwell tweeted.

Maxwell’s slant against the Jazz runs so deep he even has a tweet pinned from 2017 teasing the state.

“I’d like 2 apologize Jazz fans that were offended by my tweets,” Maxwell tweeted in 2017. “If I knew u guys had internet in Utah I would’ve never made those tweets.”

In addition to the Rockets, Maxwell played for the San Antonio Spurs, Philadelphia 76ers, Orlando Magic, Charlotte Hornets, Sacramento Kings, Seattle SuperSonics, and Dallas Mavericks.

Maxwell averaged 12.8 points, 2.6 rebounds, 3.4 assists, and 1.1 steals per game. He shot 39 percent from the field and 32 percent from the three-point line.
