SALT LAKE CITY- The track and field season is winding down, but not before Utah athletes Cara Woolnough and Josefine Erikson get a crack at the NCAA Championship. Woolnough and Erikson will be competing for titles at Hayward Field on June 9th and 11th on ESPNU and ESPN.

Erikson will compete first in the semi-finals on Thursday for the 800m. If Erikson makes it through she will compete again on Saturday.  Woolnough will be competing in the 5000m race on Saturday. This is both Utes’ first appearance at the NCAAs in their careers.

Woolnough and Erikson will be the first pair of Utes to compete individually at the NCAA Championships since Brianna LeRoy and Amanda Mergaert in 2012.

Other Notable Track And Field Notes

Sophomore cross country and track and field athlete Simone Plourde won the women’s 1500m elite division of La Classique d’athlĂ©tisme de MontrĂ©al over the weekend. Plourde posted a personal best time of  4:15.53 on Sunday at Complexe Claude-Robillard in her hometown.

“It was so much fun to race home on the track where it all started for me with old friends and former teammates,” Plourde said. “To come here and run a PR a week after a disappointing end to my NCAA season is great for the moral and will serve as added motivation heading into Canadian Nationals in two weeks.”

For now Plourde will rest and enjoy the victory before turning her attention to the Canadian Championships on June 22-26 in British Columbia.
