SALT LAKE CITY – The Indianapolis Colts announced that they’ve signed former BYU Cougars running back Ty’Son Williams.

The NFL team announced Williams’ signing on Tuesday, May 24.

Williams recently became a free agent after the Baltimore Ravens withdrew a tender on the former BYU standout.

The running back was originally tendered Williams on March 9. Baltimore withdrew the offer on May 10.

Williams joined a Colts running back room that included Jonathan Taylor, Nyheim Hines, and Phillip Lindsay. Last season, Taylor led the NFL in rushing.

Indianapolis added Lindsay to its roster earlier in May.

The Colts use Taylor as a traditional running back, while Hines is an exceptional player when he’s thrown the ball out of the backfield.

Williams and Lindsay will likely battle for a roster spot during the Colts’ offseason and training camp for the chance to serve as a backup to Taylor and Hines.

About Ty’Son Williams

Before his time in the NFL, Williams played at BYU, South Carolina, and North Carolina.

After playing at UNC and South Carolina, Williams transferred to BYU for his senior season in 2019.

He played four games for the Cougars before suffering a season-ending knee injury. During his time at BYU, Williams had 49 carries for 264 yards and three touchdowns. He also had seven catches for 47 yards. BYU had a 2-1 record before losing its fourth game of the season after Williams’ injury.

Williams went undrafted in 2020 and signed with the Ravens as an undrafted free agent. He spent most of the 2020 season on Baltimore’s practice squad.

Last season, Williams ran the ball 35 times for 185 yards and a touchdown. He added nine catches for 84 yards out of the backfield.

He played in 13 games for Baltimore in 2021 and helped the Ravens to an 8-9 record. Baltimore missed the playoffs.

Indianapolis finished the 2021 season with a 9-8 record and missed the playoffs.
