PROVO, Utah – BYU football picked up another commitment out of the Transfer Portal in Arizona State’s Sione Veikoso.

Veikoso officially entered the portal two days ago, after the May 1 deadline. But his paperwork to ASU’s compliance office was submitted before the deadline making him eligible to compete for playing time in 2022.

Veikoso is one of the many ASU players that has entered the portal this off-season amid the NCAA’s investigation into the Sun Devils program.

Sione Veikoso: From Tempe to Provo

At 6-foot-7, 325-pounds, Veikoso was a prospect in the class of 2018 that was recruited by Kalani Sitake’s BYU staff coming out of high school. He initially committed to Oregon State as a two-star prospect from Kailua, Hawaii.

After he signed with the Beavers, Veikoso served a two-year mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Once his mission was completed, he flipped from the Beavers to the Sun Devils.

Veikoso participated in one game last season for ASU, maintaining his redshirt year. When he arrives at BYU, he will have four years to play four with the Cougars.

During Arizona State spring practices earlier this year, ASU Insider Chris Karpman from 247Sports called Veikoso a “darkhorse candidate” to be a starter at offensive tackle for the Sun Devils in 2022.

BYU continues to build talented O-Line room

Veikoso joins a BYU offensive line room that offensive coordinator Aaron Roderick believes is “10 deep” and “Big 12 ready” coming out of spring practices. The leader of the group is left tackle Blake Freeland. Some NFL mock drafts have forecasted Freeland as a potential 2023 first round pick.

The Cougars also have veteran Clark Barrington at left guard, who could be another NFL draft pick next year.

Veikoso is the fifth commitment BYU has landed out of the transfer portal during the 2022 cycle, and he’s the second offensive line commit. He joins former five-star recruit Kingsley Suamataia that transferred in from Oregon. Suamataia is projected to be a starter at right tackle for BYU in 2022.

BYU’s other transfer portal commitments include Cal running back Christopher Brooks, Stanford fullback Houston Heimuli, and Vanderbilt cornerback Gabe Jeudy-Lally.
