SALT LAKE CITY- The deadline to hit the NCAA transfer portal for immediate eligibility in 2022 has now past. With the dust somewhat settled (guys can still enter the portal, but will have to sit a year now) where do the Utes sit? Follow along for the current breakdown as of May 1st.

The Breakdown

The Utes have had nine players hit the transfer portal so far before the May 1st deadline. It is important to note that there could be a few names that pop up in the next day or two that will still be eligible to play in 2022. Getting through the paperwork takes some time, and it is very possible someone got the paperwork in by the deadline, but compliance hasn’t worked through it yet.

Utah has four defensive players in the portal, three offensive players, one two-way, and one special teams player. Of the eight current players who hit the portal, six were on scholarship and two were walk-ons.

The Utes are very confident about the ability of the 2022 team to match or beat what they accomplished last year and will be making some moves in the coming weeks with the open spots to sure up the lineup.

Who Entered The Portal?

  • Stone Azacron, Sr., Safety (not on scholarship)
  • Ben Renfro, So., Receiver/Safety
  • Kamo’i Latu, So., Safety
  • Braeden Wissler, So., Running Back (not on scholarship)
  • Marist Talavou, So., Offensive Line
  • Carson Tabaracci, Fr., Linebacker
  • Kyrese Rowan, So., Receiver
  • Cameron Peasley, So., Punter
  • Johnny Fanaika, RSFr., Defensive End

Also Worth Noting

The Utes have had some movement before the “new normal”  post-spring exodus that just took place. Freshman receiver Ryan Peppins hit the portal earlier in April after struggling to adjust to being so far from his home in Alabama.  Offensive lineman Luke Felix-Fualalo also hit the portal early in April and just recently found a new home with Hawai’i.

So far, Utah is expecting one transfer in with more coming about in the coming days and weeks. Clayton Isbell, a safety out of Illinois State is expected in time for fall camp. Isbell will provide the Utes with two years of eligibility while bolstering their defensive secondary.
