SALT LAKE CITY – The idea of former BYU star Taysom Hill becoming a starting quarterback in the NFL has hit a massive bump in the road.

Since Sean Payton stepped away from the Saints head coach position, there have been rumblings that Hill would move out of the quarterback room.

Saints new headman Dennis Allen put to rest any idea that Hill will be contending with Jameis Winston for the starting quarterback role.

During a press conference at the NFL’s annual Owners Meetings, Allen addressed Hill’s role moving forward.

“I think the role for Taysom is going to be a lot more of the F tight end, move tight end type of role,” Allen said. “I think that’s the direction that we need to move with him, cause I think he can be one of the better players in the league in that role.”

The Saints maintained the same offensive coordinator they’ve had for the past 13 years in Pete Carmichael. Hill’s breakthrough as a player in the NFL came in the “F position” role in Carmichael and Payton’s offense.

Hill’s unique playmaking ability from Hill has always been his best characteristic with the Saints. But it’s a far cry from the talk of being the next face of the franchise for the Saints after Drew Brees. That has never materialized.

“If Jameis is out there playing quarterback, I don’t really like Taysom standing next to me on the sideline. So I think you’ll see him more in that type of role,” Allen said.

The Saints restructured Hill’s contract for the third time in the past two years earlier this month. Which in retrospect, was another indication that this “F position” role was likely the new spot for Hill in 2022.

Hill, who turns 32 this fall, has passed for 2,025 yards during his NFL career that dates back to 2017. He’s 7-2 overall as a starting quarterback during his pro career.
