PROVO, Utah – BYU basketball didn’t want to be in the NIT, but they are taking advantage of having additional games at the Marriott Center.

On Wednesday night for the NIT Quarterfinal game against Washington State, BYU welcomed the nation’s No. 1 junior college point guard prospect Sean East for an official visit. East is the No. 2 overall JUCO prospect in the 2022 cycle, according to JUCOrecruiting.com.

East, a 6-foot-3, 185-pound point guard, is currently enrolled at John A. Logan College in Carterville, Illinois. Before enrolling at John A. Logan College this season, East played two years of D1 ball, his freshman year at UMass, then the COVID year at Bradley.

This season at John A. Logan College, East averages 20.9 points per game, dishing out 5.7 assists while shooting 53% from the field and 41% from three-point range. As a result, programs such as DePaul, South Florida, and Missouri have shown interest in the guard.

His father joined East during the official visit. The two observed pregame warmups of BYU-Washington State from courtside seats. During the game, they sat three rows behind the BYU bench.

BYU basketball has a need for a star guard to replace Barcello

The John A. College standout has two years of eligibility remaining in his collegiate career. If East signed with BYU, he would have the opportunity to be the next star guard for the Cougars replacing Alex Barcello. He’d also have the chance to be a face of the BYU program entering the Big 12 era in 2023.

The regular signing period for college basketball begins on Wednesday, April 13 and runs through May 18, 2022.
