Nathan Chen Shatters Men’s Figure Skating Short Program Record

Feb 7, 2022, 10:32 PM | Updated: Feb 8, 2022, 9:15 am

SALT LAKE CITY – Salt Lake City’s Nathan Chen shattered the record score in the Men’s Figure Skating Short Program and is well on his way to winning Gold at the Winter Olympics.

Chen participated in the Men’s Figure Skating Short Program at Capital Indoor Stadium on Monday, February 7.

The native Utahn crushed his routine and produced a record-breaking score of 113.97.

“Yeah, I mean, I’m just really happy to be here. I’m so happy with the way that program went. Scores aren’t always in my control, of course, so all I can try to do is do the very best that I can in that moment in those two minutes and 50 seconds, or in my case, three minutes. And yeah, just really do the best that I can, and I was happy I was able to do that,” Chen said to KSL’s Alex Cabrero minutes after his skate.

He went on to say, “What happened in 2018 definitely helped me grow and learn a lot — I learned a lot from that mistake. So, you know, getting another chance, I didn’t want to make that same error again.”

The previous short program record was held by Chen’s rival and two-time defending Olympic champion, Yuzuru Hanyu. Hanyu’s previous record score was 111.82.

After Chen jumped into first place, Japan’s Yuma Kagiyama moved to second place with a score of 108.12.

Shoma Uno of Japan finished in third place with a score of 105.90. Hanyu placed seventh.

The 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics

Just a year after Japan’s summer Olympics, the Games are back for a winter show in Beijing, China. The unusually short gap between Games is due to the ongoing Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Strict precautions and enforced virus prevention protocol are in place to help keep athletes, coaches and personnel safe.

Beijing is the capital of China, with a population of more than 20 million people and the first city to host both a Summer and Winter Olympic games. It is one of the largest cities in the world and 15 hours ahead of Mountain Time. There are 13 different venues in and around Beijing that will be used for the Winter Olympics. A total of 109 events will be held in 15 different sports, and there will be a lot of Utah locals competing for medals. Keep up to date with them at our Olympic headquarters.
