PROVO, Utah – BYU football isn’t done adding players out of the transfer portal. Moments after Cal running back Christopher Brooks announced he transferred to BYU; the Cougars also announced the addition of Stanford fullback Houston Heimuli.

Heimuli is a 5-foot-11, 265-pound fullback out of Bountiful, Utah, who appeared in 42 games as a blocking back for the Cardinal. The son of former BYU great running back Lakei Heimuli, Houston was named a team captain at Stanford during the 2021 season.

BYU head football coach Kalani Sitake has a soft spot in his heart for fullbacks, as he was once one when he played for the legendary LaVell Edwards from 1994, 1997-2000.

“As a former fullback, I have a huge appreciation for the consistent and important contributions Houston has made for his team over his career,” said Sitake in a press release.

Heimuli was a lead blocker for talented Stanford running backs Bryce Love, Cameron Scarlett, and Austin Jones. Coming out of the backfield, Heimuli can be a threat in short-yardage situations and as a receiver. Pro Football Focus rated Heimuli as the 10th ranked fullback in receiving in 2021.

In the weight room, Heimuli can push a lot of weight. At Stanford, Heimuli put up 610 pounds in the back squat, 351 for power clean, and 410 on the bench.

Heimuli is enrolled in classes at BYU right now and will participate in spring practices with the BYU football program this season. The former Bountiful Brave has one year of college eligibility remaining.

Heimuli is the only true fullback on BYU’s roster for the 2022 season. Masen Wake is a “wing tight end” that also lines up out of the backfield in BYU’s offense.
