SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah State men’s basketball team outlasted the Pennsylvania Quakers in double overtime to advance in the Myrtle Beach Invitational.

The Aggies and Quakers played in opening round of the tournament on Thursday, November 18.

USU defeated Penn after two overtime periods, 87-79.

After the two teams were knotted at 64 points a piece following the first 40 minutes of action, the Aggies went up by two points in the first overtime on a Brandon Horvath layup.

Penn’s Max Martz buried a deep jump shot with 27 seconds left. The make was originally called a three-pointer, but was changed to a two-point field goal after the officials reviewed the play. Neither team was able to score for the rest of the period and the game was sent to another overtime with the scoreboard tied at 73-73.

The Aggies held the Quakers scoreless for the first 2:31 of the second overtime to take control of the game. USU finished the game on a 14-6 run in the second overtime to capture the win.

Utah State shot 46.3 percent for the game, including 42.1 percent from beyond the arc.

Justin Bean led USU with a career-high 33 points on 13-19 field goals. He added 16 rebounds, four assists, and four steals.

The Aggies limited the Quakers to 40.0 percent shooting overall and 27.3 percent from downtown.

With the victory, the Aggies improved their record to 2-1 this season.

Utah State’s next game is the semifinal round of the Myrtle Beach Invitational. The Aggies will play against the New Mexico State Aggies on Friday, November 19 at 10 a.m. (MDT).
