Like in college basketball, the Naismith High School Player of the Year recognizes the top male and female players in prep basketball.
Some of the biggest basketball names have won the award, including LeBron James, Kobe Bryant, and the 2021 No. 1 overall NBA draft pick Cade Cunningham. In addition, former Utah Jazz player Derrick Favors won the high school Naismith Trophy in 2009, coming out of South Atlanta High School in Georgia.
All but three of the Naismith High School Trophy winners have gone on to play in the NBA. The first year of the award was in 1987.
Collin Chandler is one of the nation’s top recruits
Chandler picked BYU on Wednesday during the first day of the Early Signing Period. The 6-foot-4, 170-pound combo guard picked BYU over Utah, Arizona, Oregon, Stanford, and Gonzaga. In the online recruiting era that dates back to 2000, Chandler is the highest-rated recruit to ever commit to BYU, passing former Lone Peak High star Eric Mika, who signed in the class of 2013 and went on to have a brief career in the NBA.

During his junior year with the Phoenix, Chandler averaged 22.6 points, 5.0 rebounds, 2.8 assists, and 1.5 steals per game. Farmington opens up the 2021-22 season on December 2nd against Hillcrest High (Idaho).
On the AAU circuit, Chandler plays for the Utah Prospects, and it was with the Prospects that he made a name for himself as a national recruit showing off his long-distance range, combined with high-flying athleticism.
Chandler and the Farmington Phoenix began practicing for the 2021-22 season this week. The first game of the season for Farmington is November 23 against East High.
