No. 8 American Fork Overcomes Slow Start, Holds Off No. 9 Riverton

AMERICAN FORK, Utah – The No. 8 American Fork Cavemen overcame a slow start to defeat the No. 9 Riverton Silverwolves.
The Cavemen hosted the Silverwolves on Friday, October 29.
American Fork beat Riverton, 20-13.

After a scoreless first quarter, the Cavemen faced some emotional adversity early in the second quarter. American Fork’s Maddox Ray went down with a non-contact leg injury following a catch. After receiving medical attention for a few minutes, Ray was placed on a stretcher before leaving the field.
One play later, the Cavemen fumbled the ball and the Silverwolves recovered the pigskin to take possession near midfield with 10:25 left in the second quarter.
With 2:51 left in the first half, Riverton got onto the scoreboard for the first points of the game with a 27-yard field goal by Dylan Turville.
The Cavemen responded with a touchdown drive that ended with a pass from Maddux Madsen to Trey Roberts. The play gave American Fork a 6-3 lead with 26 seconds left in the half. Riverton blocked the PAT to hold American Fork’s lead to three points at halftime.
American Fork open the second half with a strong drive that ended with an Evan Agor touchdown run to extend the lead to 13-3 with 7:49 left in the third quarter.

The Cavemen found the end zone at the start of the fourth quarter on another connection between Madsen and Roberts. The touchdown stretched American Fork’s advantage to 20-3 with 11:36 left to play.
With 7:29 remaining, the Silverwolves found the end zone for their first touchdown of the game when Colby Barton hit Sam Woolley. The play also gave the Silverwolves their first points of the second half. The score cut American Fork’s lead to 20-10.
After stopping the Cavemen from putting the game away with more points, the Silverwolves drove down the field before connecting on a field goal with 1:03 left in the game. The kick made it a one-score game at 20-13.
After taking possession following Riverton’s kickoff, American Fork was unable to run out the clock and was forced to punt in the final minute of play.
However, the Cavemen picked off Barton with 25 seconds left and sealed their victory.
American Fork will face No. 1 Corner Canyon on Friday, November 5 at 6 p.m. (MDT).
