PROVO, Utah – Name someone who loves Halloween more than BYU athletic director Tom Holmoe. We’ll wait.
Holmoe, who always pulls out the stops for his annual Halloween costume, didn’t hold back again this year. Holmoe showed up to work on Friday dressed as Rafiki from The Lion King on the BYU campus.

Imagine Holmoe going around the third floor at BYU’s Student Athlete Building today saying, “Asante sana squash banana!” How can you not be happy at that thought?

This has been an enormous year for Holmoe and BYU athletics. First, BYU received a long-awaited invitation to the Big 12 Conference, giving the Cougars validation as a Power 5 athletic department. They will join the league beginning in 2023.
For his efforts putting together a football schedule amidst COVID-19, Tom Holmoe was named athletic director of the year. Holmoe worked relentlessly on BYU’s football schedule, brokering games against Alabama and Texas A&M before the SEC went to a conference-only schedule. Then he put together the memorable BYU-Coastal Carolina matchup a little over 48 hours before kickoff.
It’s been a big year for Holmoe. His Halloween costume of Rafiki only adds to the impressive year for him.
In the past, Holmoe’s Halloween costumes include last year’s Phantom of the Opera, Albert Einstein, Geenie from Aladdin, and the Mad Hatter.
Holmoe has been in the role of BYU athletic director since 2005.
