SUU Can’t Overcome Slow Start In Loss To Sacramento State

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – The Southern Utah Thunderbirds couldn’t overcome a slow start in the first quarter in their 41-20 loss to Sacramento State.
Justin Miller threw for 197 yards, one touchdown and three interceptions for SUU in the loss. They picked up just 43 rushing yards as a team and committed three turnovers.
Sacramento State started the game with 17 points in the first quarter. Isaiah Gable started things off with a four-yard touchdown run in the first 2:10 of the game. Kyle Sentkowski made it 10-0 with a 45-yard field goal.

The Hornets capped off the opening period with a 10-yard TD run by Asher O’Hara. SUU scored first in the second quarter with an Isaiah Williams touchdown run to trim the deficit to 17-7.
Sacramento State responded four minutes later with a passing touchdown to extend the lead to 24-7. O’Hara found the end zone again to put the game out of reach with a 31-7 advantage with five minutes left in the third.
SUU did get a touchdown pass from Miller to Ethan Bolingbroke with under two minutes to go in the third quarter. In the fourth quarter, Sacramento State added 10 points to their total with a field goal and touchdown, while the Thunderbirds found the end zone on a Jordan Jefferson TD run with 3:54 to play in the game.
The Thunderbirds dropped their record to 1-5 overall and 0-3 in Big Sky play. They will be back on the road on Saturday, October 16 to face Northern Arizona. Kickoff is at 2 p.m. MT on ESPN+.
