PROVO, Utah – BYU wide receiver Brayden Cosper is out for the 2021 season due to an injury he suffered during Camp Kalani practices.

Head coach Kalani Sitake was asked if his team had suffered any season-ending injuries in fall camp. Sitake then brought up the setback to the former Bingham High standout.

“We did have one season-ending injury. That was Brayden Cosper,” Sitake said. “He got hurt a few days ago. He had surgery and he’s gonna be recovering, and he’s back with the team in meetings and helping the guys out. He’s gonna be basically coaching and trying to be the leader that he’s been for us all year long. So that’s the unfortunate situation that we have right now with him being down.”

Sitake gave some details into what caused Cosper’s injury.

“He made a great catch and came down on it wrong and so he’s out for the year. But other than that, everybody else is still in play for the first game,” Sitake said.

Cosper arrived at practice on Tuesday wearing a cast and sling on his left hand. No further details were provided on the sophomore’s injury.

Career snapshot for Brayden Cosper at BYU

A former three-star recruit out of South Jordan, Cosper was on the same Bingham High team as Dax Milne. Coming out of high school, Cosper was the one who received a scholarship from BYU initially after his prep career concluded. Injuries have plagued the 6-foot-3, 205-pound receiver’s career thus far at BYU.

As a freshman in 2018, Cosper suffered a season-ending injury while on the scout team. Then in 2019, he was coming back from an injury and his availability. Last season, Cosper started to have some breakthroughs in his development as former offensive coordinator Jeff Grimes called him “one of the most improved players” in BYU’s program.

He played in 10 games, starting in one during BYU’s magical 11-1 season a year ago.

This year, Cosper was projected to be one of the top five or six receivers in a loaded pass-catcher room.

Since Cosper’s injury last week, freshman wide receiver Keanu Hill has made a climb up the depth chart. Senior Gunner Romney told KSL Sports he’s been impressed with the recent play of the 6-foot-4 freshman receiver from Bedford, Texas.

Cosper is the third season-ending injury so far for BYU in 2021. The other two players were freshmen on defense in linebacker Tavita (Kavika) Gagnier and safety Talan Alfrey.

BYU wrapped up fall camp practices on Tuesday, as they now shift their focus to preparations for the season opener against Arizona.
