SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Tony Finau has concluded his first round at the 3M Open at one-over-par, eight shots off the first-round leader Rickie Fowler.
Wet Opening Round
Finau began his round on the 10th tee and made five consecutive pars before making back-to-back birdies before ending his opening nine holes with a bogey. He made the turn at one under.
Then, a double-bogey dropped, followed by a bogey, after two consecutive approach shots found the water. His final birdie came on the par 4 5th hole when he sunk a 17-foot putt for birdie.
Finau was paired with Sergio Garcia and Rickie Fowler. Garcia ended the opening round at one-under-par while Fowler leads the tournament at seven-under-par.
The tournament was suspended momentarily due to inclement weather, Finau at the time was through 14 holes before taking a two-hour break.
Last year, the tournament was not played due to the global pandemic. However, in 2019 Finau finished in lone third. The year before that he finished in a T-23 in his 3M Open debut.

Return To Form
Finau enters the 3M Open following a top 15 finish at Royal St. George’s Golf Club. Prior to The Open, Finau missed consecutive cuts for the second time this PGA Tour season.
The PGA Tour season only has seven tournaments remaining before the concluding Tour Championship occurs at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta, Georgia.
The Ryder Cup is the next big golfing event this year following the conclusion of the major tournaments last week at The Open. The Ryder Cup is scheduled to begin on September 24th and as it stands Finau is not in a position to make the USA team.
He will require strong finishes the rest of the way to further solidify himself as a Ryder Cup participant.
