SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Real Salt Lake striker and Honduran international Douglas Martinez would have preferred to start his bid for Olympic supremacy differently.
Honduras entered the opening game of the tournament with high expectations having beaten the U.S. to qualify for Tokyo.
Martinez, who has been mostly out of form and playing with the Real Monarchs in 2021, started for Honduras. He made a number of key plays predominantly playing on the wing and at the point of the attack but never found the magic formula to gift his country their first goal of the Olympic Games.
Despite the result, Martinez will likely play a key role for Honduras moving forward. His production pre-tournament during the qualifying process was key.

“Representing my country is an immense pride and satisfaction for me,” Martinez said during his pre-tournament interview with Real Salt Lake. “I cant wait to meet again with my teammates and enjoying the Olympics together,” he added.
Unfortunately, Honduras fell to Romania 1-0 to open their Olympic campaign. They will next play New Zealand on Sunday, July 25 at 2 a.m.
