SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – A lot of buzz has surrounded the release of the new Space Jam movie starring Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James.
I was able to take my 5-year-old son to see the movie on Tuesday afternoon and wanted to give it a review for those that are considering seeing Space Jam: A New Legacy.
Reviews from national pundits are in and it has not been kind towards LeBron James and Space Jam. This was the long-awaited film that was released 25 years after the first one with Michael Jordan was released.
Growing up, the first Space Jam was one of my favorite movies of all-time. I know that isn’t a popular opinion but I really enjoyed that movie. When an announcement came about a second one, I was really excited.
One of the joys in my early years of fatherhood is introducing my 5-year-old son to Space Jam. We watched the first movie last year when the COVID-19 pandemic was in its early stages. He was excited on Tuesday when I told him we were going to watch the second one.
Without giving any spoilers, here are my thoughts on Space Jam: A New Legacy.

Reviewing Space Jam: A New Legacy
Let’s start with LeBron James the actor. We all know what he can do on the basketball court but this was his first film where he was the star. James was okay in Space Jam. Not great but not awful either.
Some of his lines were cheesy, while some of them were funny. He even took a playful jab to his Lakers teammate Anthony Davis. Here is what I will say about the film. If you are a grown adult that was a kid when the first Space Jam came out, temper your expectations for the second one when you go see it.
You obviously don’t like the same things now than you did 25 years ago. This is definitely a movie for kids. I have taken my son to movies in theaters before. Sometimes he will watch most of it but will get bored of it. Not this time. He was glued to the screen the entire time the movie was on. I never had to tell him to be quiet. Not once. That has never happened before.
The plot was decent but it could’ve been better. I will say that it was good to see Bugs Bunny and the crew again.
When it’s all said and done, I give Space Jam: A New Legacy a 6/10. My son gives it a 10/10.
